Viatge pel Carib - Dia 1 i 2 / Trip in the Caribean - Day 1 & 2

Dia 1 i 2: Tortuguero
Plou, i plou molt.

One week ago I was in the Caribean side of the country. I went there with my roommate Rebekka. And the trip took like 4 days:

Day 1 & 2
: Tortuguero--> this parc, which is in the north side of the coast, is one of the typical tourist destinations. Only some months a year is possible to see the turtles nesting, and october is the last month until february. So we really had to go now! To get there from Heredia it takes like 8h with public transport: Heredia (where you meet desperate gringos to make friends, hehe)-San José-Cariari-La Pavona by bus, and from there you take a boat to the village of Tortuguero. The total price is not much, around 12€. But in Cariari you have to be careful, since there is a woman there that offers you the trip to La Pavona by bus and then the boat for 8$ (here $ can be more important than the colon itself). It is a private company (and they don't mention it), that makes you pay double for the same trip as if you would do it by public transport. But it is worth, since there is less people in the boat and you can see better all kind of animals: birds, monkeys, crocodriles, iguanas (they camuflate so well with the leaves of the trees!) and turtles. More over, with the public boat you take the risk of being the next meal of the crocodriles, hehe, since they want to put so many people inside that we almost sink. We did one trip by private boat and the return trip with the public one. If you decide to take one way the private one do it during the midday, cos it's when you can see more animals. Once you are in Tortuguero there are 100 guys trying to be your guide around the park or to organize your advetures in Tortuguero. You should check prices cos there are differences sometimes. We went by ourselves to look for a hostel (Cabinas Tortuguero, 10$, good and simple place) and also to fins a guide to go to see the turtles at night nesting (you must go with an official guide, which is at least 10$ too). We didn't visit the park cos it's 10$ more and two girls from Madrid told us it is similar to many other parks in CR. One think which is not nice in Tortuguero are the prices of food, the same dish can cost double compared to Heredia or San José. But well, we needed to eat, right?
At night we went to look for the turtles. It rains, and it rains a lot.
We go out with the slippers and a raincoat. We have only 2 hours to see the turtles (the park only allows you to be there 2h), end of the season, low probabilities. We wait under a porch for 45 min, the guide explains us in the meanwhile the cycle of the turtles, types, actual situation, etc (very interesting). Then they tell him via radio that there is a turtle nesting in the point 32 of the beach. So all the groups go there, like donkeys, hehe. We need to wait for the turtle to be in trance (this is when they start nesting the eggs) to switch on the red light and see the eggs falling, so we sit on the beach and wait. Then they tell us there is another one coming from the sea, I look over there and yes, there is something!. So everybody stares to that direction, to see, in the dark, how the turtle comes in. But the dude takes hours to move, strange...after 30' the guide tells us that it is a false alarm, probably just a piece of wood, hahaha. I can imagine hour stupid faces at that moment. Well, after 10 min the different groups can start looking at the real turtle, hehe, in trance nesting the eggs. It is a really nice vieuw, totally from the National Geographic. After that she starts covering the eggs with sand with her leggs and by then it was the time to return back to the hostel, where it was so hot!.
Next morning we woke up at 5h to take the boat at 6h and go to Puerto Viejo, the southern part of the coast. As i said before, the boat almost sinks (actually we crossed with a sunk boat). The trip to Puerto Viejo took like 9h again, crossing Cariari, Guápiles, Limón and finally Puerto Viejo.

Tomorrow the rest of the trip! For photos of Tortuguero check here (although there are not many cos i was not motivated, my mistake). Some of them are from Rebekka.
